Lee Bains is a Rolling Stone-acclaimed songwriter and New Yorker-published poet whose work is steeped in the American South. Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, and living in Atlanta for over a decade, Bains’s songs are hopeful, but far from naive.

On 2022’s Old-Time Folks (Don Giovanni), his fourth album with The Glory Fires, he delivers songs that mix sounds of the South — rock and roll, gospel, punk, soul, country, hip-hop — to deliver stories of resistance and love.

Challenging revisionist histories that would prefer to forget the worst parts of our collective past as much as the present neoliberal logic that reduces people to numbers, they celebrate the messiness of humanity and the power of solidarity and love.

New York City-based Starcleaner Reunion is a new band of old friends. Singer Jo Roman, guitarists Pat Drummond & Neil Torman, and bassist Adam Kenter have been making music together in various configurations since they were high school students together in New Jersey, but never all together in the same group. After Drummond moved back to New York from Montreal and connecting with drummer Sam Unger through a mutual friend, the band solidified and began rehearsing in 2022.

Their new EP, Café Life, is the result of a newfound home-recording and production process, an inspired project in which the band felt they could explore and experiment for the first time. Listen closely and you’ll hear samples of rain and thunderstorms, rumbling 808 sub-bass, digital synthesizers ripped from a decade old copy of GarageBand, and ghostly spoken poetry buried deep in the mix of the 4 tracks. Café Life is indebted and dedicated to not hurrying and taking your time.

From the moment the group was formed, Starcleaner Reunion has been guided by their belief that music can be transportive and furnish a unique world. Jo Roman’s lyrics paint a captivating picture – one that prompts audiences to reckon with the impressions and colors that her imagery conjures up. Café Life is their first release that welcomes people into a world of their own

Chanel Beads — the project of New York-based musician Shane Lavers — announces his debut album, Your Day Will Come (out 4/19 on Jagjaguwar), and shares the lead single/video, “Idea June.” Your Day Will Come marks Lavers’ arrival as a new force in experimental music. Throughout the album, Lavers captures the many contradictions of modern existence and the strange infiniteness of the digital world. Though he incorporates the scrappy sonics of post-punk, the gripping sentimentality of pop tunes, and the spectral artifice of electronic music, he blurs lines through unconventional song structures that build into transcendental climaxes. As he intentionally prints his songs down to embed fried artifacts and ghostly remains, the resulting songs have a time-collapsing quality, both transitory and timeless.

More Eaze is the project of brooklyn-based sound artist and multi-instrumentalist Mari Maurice. Ranging from ambient pop to deconstructed sound collage, her numerous solo and collaborative releases weave mundane, everyday sounds, acoustic orchestration and instrumentation, and electronics into adventurous textural compositions. Her music explores themes of intimacy, yearning, and the transformation of abstract feeling into intense living through sound design that moves seamlessly between the banal and the ethereal. She has recently released work with Longform Editions, Leaving Records, Ecstatic, and Orange Milk with forthcoming releases on Thrill Jockey and 15 love. Her work as a string arranger, pedal steel player, and producer has recently been featured on recordings by Martha Skye Murphy, Water Damage, Lomelda, Fashion Club, Claire Rousay, Space Afrika and Rainy Miller, and Nick Zanca amongst others. She regularly performs in the duos Pink Must (w/ Lynn Avery) and whait (w/ Wendy Eisenberg) and is a regular member of the bands Water Damage and Iceblink.

When Ryan Olcott, songwriter and frontman of Twin Cities’ iconic indie rock band 12 Rods, found unfinished Rods demos during lockdown, he was surprised. When he realized they were good, he was shocked. He quickly set to finishing and recording the compositions, which became If We Stayed Alive, the first 12 Rods album in twenty-one years. “These are songs that I forgot about,” he explains, “but upon finding them, I thought, ‘Wow, these are actually okay.’” That was the easy part. Reacquainting himself with a twenty-year-removed craft and technique took some getting used to — some parts longer than others. He recorded all the instruments in a week, but the vocals took a bit longer. “Oh my god!” he laughs, “it took a couple of days to get my voice back with that range and that power, but I could do it.” Any cobwebs that needed dusting are long gone. If We Stayed Alive is everything longtime fans have wanted, and the perfect introduction to what some called “America’s Radiohead” and what others have called one of the best indie bands of the ‘90s.

System Exclusive (or SysEx if you sassy) are a dynamic synth-punk duo originally from San Francisco, California, USA, weaving a wall of sound out of two people and limited resources: a guitar, drums, a stack of miniature keyboards, and Ari’s towering yet vulnerable alto. Matt, well versed in the dark arts of MIDI, plays live drums along with his panoply of synth modules, creating driving new wavey soundscapes for Ari to slash post punk guitar and smear dramatic vocals upon. The results have taken them all over the world, with 150 shows in 13 countries last year alone.

With “Killed By Evil”, this band of twisted rippers featuring New Orleans elites Drew Owen (Sick Thoughts), John Henry (Static Static), Michael Hohan (Trampoline Team), and Panzer (Persuaders/ Tirefire) tap even deeper into the sullen world of brutal 80’s metal and hardcore.

On “Killed By Evil”, Total Hell masterfully references the sounds of bands like Venom, John Carpenter, Slayer, and Discharge, while creating their own cursed, singular vibe. On tracks like “Demonized” and “Nuclear Satanic Warfare”, Total Hell taps into warped, proto-metal landscapes accessing dark, ruthless shredding and pummeling d-beat… While on the “Intro” and “Outro” tracks, the band takes the listener on a demented, atmospheric odyssey with synthesized soundscapes and psychedelic space guitar tangles. The album’s arrangement is deeply intentional and conceptual glued together with devilish samples and glitchy, synthesized transitions, all while astral projecting hellish nightmares into the listeners feeble minds with their wicked and unhinged lyrics.
