Chanel Beads — the project of New York-based musician Shane Lavers — announces his debut album, Your Day Will Come (out 4/19 on Jagjaguwar), and shares the lead single/video, “Idea June.” Your Day Will Come marks Lavers’ arrival as a new force in experimental music. Throughout the album, Lavers captures the many contradictions of modern existence and the strange infiniteness of the digital world. Though he incorporates the scrappy sonics of post-punk, the gripping sentimentality of pop tunes, and the spectral artifice of electronic music, he blurs lines through unconventional song structures that build into transcendental climaxes. As he intentionally prints his songs down to embed fried artifacts and ghostly remains, the resulting songs have a time-collapsing quality, both transitory and timeless.

More Eaze is the project of brooklyn-based sound artist and multi-instrumentalist Mari Maurice. Ranging from ambient pop to deconstructed sound collage, her numerous solo and collaborative releases weave mundane, everyday sounds, acoustic orchestration and instrumentation, and electronics into adventurous textural compositions. Her music explores themes of intimacy, yearning, and the transformation of abstract feeling into intense living through sound design that moves seamlessly between the banal and the ethereal. She has recently released work with Longform Editions, Leaving Records, Ecstatic, and Orange Milk with forthcoming releases on Thrill Jockey and 15 love. Her work as a string arranger, pedal steel player, and producer has recently been featured on recordings by Martha Skye Murphy, Water Damage, Lomelda, Fashion Club, Claire Rousay, Space Afrika and Rainy Miller, and Nick Zanca amongst others. She regularly performs in the duos Pink Must (w/ Lynn Avery) and whait (w/ Wendy Eisenberg) and is a regular member of the bands Water Damage and Iceblink.

When Ryan Olcott, songwriter and frontman of Twin Cities’ iconic indie rock band 12 Rods, found unfinished Rods demos during lockdown, he was surprised. When he realized they were good, he was shocked. He quickly set to finishing and recording the compositions, which became If We Stayed Alive, the first 12 Rods album in twenty-one years. “These are songs that I forgot about,” he explains, “but upon finding them, I thought, ‘Wow, these are actually okay.’” That was the easy part. Reacquainting himself with a twenty-year-removed craft and technique took some getting used to — some parts longer than others. He recorded all the instruments in a week, but the vocals took a bit longer. “Oh my god!” he laughs, “it took a couple of days to get my voice back with that range and that power, but I could do it.” Any cobwebs that needed dusting are long gone. If We Stayed Alive is everything longtime fans have wanted, and the perfect introduction to what some called “America’s Radiohead” and what others have called one of the best indie bands of the ‘90s.

System Exclusive (or SysEx if you sassy) are a dynamic synth-punk duo originally from San Francisco, California, USA, weaving a wall of sound out of two people and limited resources: a guitar, drums, a stack of miniature keyboards, and Ari’s towering yet vulnerable alto. Matt, well versed in the dark arts of MIDI, plays live drums along with his panoply of synth modules, creating driving new wavey soundscapes for Ari to slash post punk guitar and smear dramatic vocals upon. The results have taken them all over the world, with 150 shows in 13 countries last year alone.

With “Killed By Evil”, this band of twisted rippers featuring New Orleans elites Drew Owen (Sick Thoughts), John Henry (Static Static), Michael Hohan (Trampoline Team), and Panzer (Persuaders/ Tirefire) tap even deeper into the sullen world of brutal 80’s metal and hardcore.

On “Killed By Evil”, Total Hell masterfully references the sounds of bands like Venom, John Carpenter, Slayer, and Discharge, while creating their own cursed, singular vibe. On tracks like “Demonized” and “Nuclear Satanic Warfare”, Total Hell taps into warped, proto-metal landscapes accessing dark, ruthless shredding and pummeling d-beat… While on the “Intro” and “Outro” tracks, the band takes the listener on a demented, atmospheric odyssey with synthesized soundscapes and psychedelic space guitar tangles. The album’s arrangement is deeply intentional and conceptual glued together with devilish samples and glitchy, synthesized transitions, all while astral projecting hellish nightmares into the listeners feeble minds with their wicked and unhinged lyrics.

Run for your life, fuckers… Total Hell and “Killed By Evil” are here to blow your putrid mind and bludgeon you beyond recognition with endless, unmerciful riffing.

The Flying Luttenbachers (CHI)

Since erupting forth in 1991, the seminal punk jazz/brutal prog/no wave band The Flying Luttenbachers has steadily deconstructed music, reason, and all notions of sanity on 20 releases and more than 400 live perform- ances around the world. Predictibly unpredictable, the Luttenabachers’ fierce, modernistic approach draws from inspirations like No Wave, Free Jazz, Death Metal, Noise, Modern Classical, Free Improvisation, Punk and the blackest humor possible. (The universe has been destroyed a few times during the course of the cryp- tic plot running through the releases.) During the initial runs in Chicago and the Bay Area of California, some of the prominent musicians that came through the ranks included: Ed Rodriguez (Deerhoof), Mick Barr (Kral- lice), Hal Russell (NRG Ensemble), Jonathan Hischke (Dot Hacker), Alex Perkolup (Cheer-Accident), Fred Lonberg-Holm, Ken Vandermark and many others. After a ten year break, a now NYC-based Flying Luttenbachers emerged again in 2017 and made a week long tour of France, performing an hour long set of classic material from the entire catalog and culminating at the Sonic Protest festival in Paris. The new-era al- bums “Shattered Dimension” (harmolodic skronk), “Imminent Death” (an angular tribute to ‘70s Miles Davis), “Negative Infinity” (a brutal prog highwater mark), and “Terror Iridescence” (bizarre outerspace minimalism) continued the group’s diverse agenda of organizing dissonance and energy. Never tame or predictable, The Flying Luttenbachers continue to assault musical mediocrity. The latest incarnation of this iconoclastic unit heads in yet another bold new direction

Olive Klug refuses to be put in a box. Working out who you are in front of an ever-growing audience is no small task, but one that the Portland-born, Nashville-based singer/songwriter is up for and thriving.
Olive graduated with a liberal arts degree shortly before the 2020 pandemic derailed their plans of pursuing a career in social work. Though they’d recorded and self-released the 2019 EP “Fire Alarm” from a childhood friend’s bedroom, up until early 2021, Olive categorized their music as either a hobby or a pipe dream, depending on who was asking. However, after being laid off of a teaching job in late 2020, Olive starting working as a barista and decided to commit all of their extra energy to an ever-growing community of fans online.

Olive can’t help but be unapologetically themselves, something their community of fans (dubbed the “Klug Bugs” on Instagram and Discord) appreciate most about them. Their debut LP ranges from a playful Americana romp about “watching all the rules disintegrate” to folk-punk anthem “Coming of Age,” which somehow manages to reference both pop singer Taylor Swift and existential philosopher Kierkegaard in one song, to “Parched”’s haunting modern ballad about a doomed relationship, to an indie rock closer about learning to take up space as a person with a marginalized identity. Through this no-holds-barred documentation of the struggles of their early adulthood, Klug embraces all their inner contradictions with reckless abandon.

Frail Body is a three piece band from Rockford, IL.

“Artificial Bouquet” is an eleven song album by Frail Body. Produced, engineered, and recorded by Pete Grossmann at Bricktop Recording, and mastered by Jack Shirley at The Atomic Garden (Deafheaven, Joyce Manor, Loma Prieta).

Opening track “Scaffolding” explodes out of the gate with dizzying speed before descending into a wash of discordant melody. “Berth” and “Critique Programme” then inject pulse-pounding tempo shifts and unorthodox heavy riffing into the fray. “Devotion” plays as a stunning ebb and flow epic that shows method to their musical chaos. “Monolith” and “Refrain” then blur the lines between post-hardcore and melodic black metal in their frantic approach. These lead to “No Resolution” and “Runaway”; two slow build numbers that showcase the otherworldly dynamics Frail Body possess. “Horizon Line” follows this path as it builds to bone-shaking crescendo. Lastly “Another Year Removed” serves as an instrumental bridge to closer “A Capsule In The Sediment”. A song that empties the emotional tank for all to bear witness. All of it so raw and beautifully out of control.

Without question, “Artificial Bouquet” establishes Frail Body as leaders within the modern “screamo” movement. A shining example that the once dormant sub-genre continues to evolve and thrive for all the world to see

Extra Life was formed in 2007 as the main vehicle for New York-based guitarist/composer/vocalist, Charlie Looker. The band plays a fusion of aggressive math rock, dark dramatic pop, modern classical, and ancient liturgical music, bridging the worlds of abstract art music and DIY post-punk musical culture. Looker was a founding member of NY noise-chamber outfit Zs, frontman of industrial metal band Psalm Zero, and is a prolific collaborator across the experimental music scene, with credits including Xiu Xiu, Dirty Projectors, Lingua Ignota, Darius Jones, and John Zorn.

Between 2008 and 2012, Extra Life released four records, and toured the U.S. and Europe extensively, including appearances at Primavera Sound (Spain), Moers (DE). Villette Sonique (FR), and Bad Bonn (CH), and sharing bills with Sonic Youth, Ariel Pink, Deerhoof, Owen Pallett, Deerhunter, and Chelsea Wolfe. Looker put Extra Life on hiatus in 2013, to focus on his classical composition, improvisation, and his metal band Psalm Zero.

Looker reunited Extra Life in 2021, releasing Secular Works Vol. 2 (2022), to great acclaim, and The Sacred Vowel (2024), both on his own imprint, Last Things Records. International touring followed, including a slot at A Colossal Weekend Festival (DK). The current band line-up includes Toby Driver (Kayo Dot), violinist Timba Harris (Ultraphauna, Secret Chiefs 3), and drummer Cameron Wisch (Sheer Mag, Dust Star).
